Greece - Sommer, Sun, Sea???

Thinking of Greece, you probably start dreaming of sun, sandy beaches and lonely bays - with this imagination in mind we leave Macedonia...

The northern part of Greece rather looks like if we were in the Central German Uplands in autumn. We pass lots of snow chain signs and indeed it gets very cold at night and pass some snowy mountain peaks. Our down sleeping bags keep us relatively warm, but the amount of down they loose every night gets us a bit nervous. At least sun shines every day and keeps us warm, so we enjoy the stops outside. Very often street dogs come round, there are lots of different ones: Shy, nice, playful - but also really scary ones...

To escape the cold weather and as we hope to do some dives at the end of the season on Lesvos, we decide to take another ferry. We are mostly interested in a wreck that sunk during the second world war. We have to hurry a lot on the last to reach the ferry, the perfect day for our second breakdown: Luckily repairing a broken bicycle chain doesn't take long.

We would love to go diving directly after arriving on Lesvos, as the season is over here we have to wait till the weekend and hope they find enough divers to organize a trip... We decide to do a tour round the island and visit a petrified forest, some extinct volcanoes and lava caves.

Even keeping in mind the trees have been conserved for more than 20 million years, the petrified forest doesn't look too impressive to us. Probably that's because the most beautiful trees are already wrapped up for winter. The highlight for us is the gravel road along the coast we cycled to get there as well as the unexpected climbing tour to get to a nice lava cave.

Unfortunately the dive center had to cancel the dive as they didn't have enough reservations. The only advantage is that we catch the next ferry over to Turkey - we hope for more luck, as there is a huge plane wreck waiting for us...
