UAE and Oman - family visit

After we arrived by boat from Iran to the Emirates and completing the border crossing formalities we soon start to look for a site to camp. Doing so we spot scuba divers on the beach and after 3 months out of the water we quickly decide to join them on their second dive. We leave our bikes on the beach, stop a cab and go to rent dive gear at a shop nearby. Once back we are perfectly in time for the night dive. It feels great to be under water again, weightless... Surprisingly good visibility and a lot to see make it a perfect start for the new country. Thanks a lot to Harith for that! Afterwards we camp in the middle of the city...

The next day we ride to a family from Halle, who work in Dubai. We enjoy the luxury to leave our bikes for two weeks and go on a roadtrip with a rental car. Now we head to the airport to pick up Anna – Christians daughter – and Sepp – Monis Dad. On the way there we quickly realize Dubai is a metropole and after months in rather rural areas this feels completely different. Using the Metro the first time, we do almost everything wrong: We sit together in the area dedicated for females, eating and drinking. If we had been caught, that would have been about 1000 Dirham (250€ or the budget for 2 weeks travelling)!

We are so happy to see those two again and immediately start sightseeing in Dubai. There are lots of attractions; we head to the aquarium, the old city centre, the new business area and a couple of beaches.

After 2 days we cross the border to Oman and relax and go snorkelling on the Sawadi Islands After that we drive on to Muscat and further south to Bimmah Sinkhole (a water filled doline), which is perfect for swimming and snorkelling. We like Wadi Shab even more, a great canyon where after a one hour hike you have to go on swimming and in the end get rewarded by a cavern with great plays of sunrays shining through holes in the roof. After visiting Sur, an important sea harbour in ancient times, we turn north again.

A little detour to the world’s smallest sand desert, Wahiba, is very impressive. Then we go to the mountains and “Grand Canyon” for a very short hike and remain full of stunning impressions. To sum up, every destination is worth visiting, we couldn’t even see all the places we wanted to as we did not have enough time, but really enjoyed the vacation with both of them. After taking Anna and Sepp back to the airport we start pedalling again. Again to Oman, this time we look forward to its underwater sites, fish, coral, wrecks, ...
